Boy Kill Boy and The Cinematics, Rothko, 3.22.06
I received an automated email from Rothko or Ticketweb or someone directing me to this show, and, being the easily-manipulated blogger with an extra day off that I am, I decided to check it out. Watching a show on an off-night at Rothko (as opposed to my previous experience at the Annie/Spank Rock/Kudu show back in December) felt real comfy--lots of elbow room. I don't remember the last time I went to a concert that didn't sell out. This one may have put a slight dent on my theory that every show worth seeing sells out. Apparently, The Cinematics are supposed to be the next big thing (which is why I've included them in the title of this post; it's the highest honor I can bestow on an opener).
(Disclaimer: I was a bit distracted by this hot chick in a see-through negligee, so I can't be trusted with details.)
First up, The Cinematics, whom many have deemed the next Franz Ferdinand, or even the next Editors (gasp!). I thought they were aight. Actually, searching through my memory right now, all I can remember from that night is that chick, and I wasn't even drunk...

The Cinematics used Boy Kill Boy's equipment; so indie.

At some point in the night, ultragrrrl showed up, but I honestly couldn't tell if she actually DJ'd or just schmoozed from behind the DJ booth (not that there's anything wrong with that). Quite a few bloggers were there; so many of us up front shooting photos, it felt like a press conference.
So anyway, Boy Kill Boy came up next and did their TBJ thing. They were charming, and I love "Suzie," but they at times sound disturbingly like Rooney.

My one complaint of the night was that the sound was so loud everything became muddled. My ears were still ringing the next day. But good times all around.
